When I was working as a news reporter, I was often heckled about being Asian while simply trying to do my job. To keep my composure, I never said anything, telling myself that “words are harmless.” But words and rhetoric can be internalized and cause more harm than we realize.   Race-based bullying is a reality too many youth in our AAPI community face, and it terrifies me that my own children may one day experience this too. But when we keep sharing our stories, we validate our experiences and we can be empowered to speak up more boldly for one another.
