If you are like me and use your rain barrel water for animals, DON'T do this! Use mosquito dunks! My barrels are covered and dark colored, no algae 😏

You have to put a screen on top of it to keep bugs out and you also have to have an opaque barrel that blocks sunlight to stop algae growth.

Personally I use a wire copper coil. Kills bacterial, viral, fungal microbes and algae and you never have to replace it.
