Xizhou Ancient Town 喜洲古镇 in Dali is a historic Bai town between Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake. One must try experience here is Bai ethnic tie-dye 白族扎染. With a history spanning over 1,000 years, this traditional textile art was recognised as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China in 2006 Bai tie-dye uses natural indigo dye made by fermenting the leaves and stems of indigo plants 板蓝根. During the dyeing process, the fabric emerges green before oxidising in the air and turning blue, creating long-lasting patterns The signature blue and white colours symbolise hope and sincerity, while traditional motifs reflect the Bai people’s connection with nature. The motifs are hand tied, with variations in the tying pressure creating unique patterns and textures Tie-dye experience: 120-180CNY You’re given a pre-bound piece of fabric to finish stitching before it’s dyed, with the pattern revealed after the tie-dye process. I gave the stitching a go but ended up asking staff for help 😝 I filmed the tie-dye process with permission from the staff, and then came the final reveal.
