☀️ Weben Ra em akhet iabet. Ra rises in the eastern horizon. Few images capture ancient Egyptian spirituality as beautifully as the sun appearing in the east. To us, sunrise may simply mark the beginning of another day. To the ancient Egyptians, it represented something much greater: the restoration of life itself. The word akhet referred to the horizon, that mysterious boundary where earth and sky seemed to meet. The eastern horizon was especially sacred because it was the place of emergence and renewal. After traveling through the darkness of the Duat during the night, Ra appeared again in the east, radiant and victorious. That daily return transformed the Egyptian sunrise into a cosmic event. Ra had survived the dangers of night. Chaos had failed to overcome him. Ma’at, the divine order of the universe, remained intact. The western horizon carried a different meaning. It was where the sun disappeared and where the realm of the dead was symbolically approached. East and west therefore became part of one continuous cycle: departure, transformation, return. I find that idea incredibly beautiful. The Egyptians looked at the same sunrise we see today and found within it a promise that darkness was temporary. Tonight the sun will vanish. Tomorrow, Ra will appear again.
