When it comes to hi-hats, I don’t recommend widening them. In fact, in genres like house and trap, it often just sounds off. Phasey, unnatural, etc… I can hear that Ozone imager widener from a mile away.. 🤣 Shakers are a bit more flexible. You can get creative with them. Depends on the genre… Crashes? That’s a different story. Sometimes I’ll throw a chorus on a crash as an insert - not to make it bigger, but to push it back. Smear it just a little, degrade it intentionally so it doesn’t dominate the mix. 🎧 If your goal is clarity and consistency, steer clear of widener plugins on transient-heavy or rhythm-critical elements. Especially as inserts - they’ll just mess up the focus of your mix. Be intentional.
