#Philosophy is often accused of being pointless. But today we're going to look at how it can give you the #power to take over the world. It's a power to change people's minds and make them do what you want. It all goes back to Aristotle's ‘Rhetoric.’ #Rhetoric is the art of persuasion. It's about using speech to change people's minds, to win a debate, and to whip up a crowd. It's about politicians running for election, but it's also about how you can get a promotion at work. So, what are these skills of persuasion? Well, Aristotle lists three: ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is being, or seeming to be, a good character. If we think someone's trustworthy or respectable, we're much more likely to listen to what they say. So, a doctor, a professor, or even that influencer that you really like will persuade you more than Squiffy Steve down the pub. Pathos is the ability to arouse emotion. In order to do this, we first have to understand the nature of the emotion we want to evoke. For example, we can evoke anger by pointing out an injustice done to the crowd and pointing out who's to blame. Logos is the use of facts and good arguments, so we assume our listeners are reasonable and rational, and we only have to make a good case. But #Aristotle was not so naive as to think this would always be true, and good rhetoric needs all three elements to be effective. But he gave the greatest weight to logos, which is something a more cynical mind might disagree with. So how are you going to use your newfound powers of persuasion?
