With my usual high-iron stoneware, that’s a touch grogged, I can trim it when it’s relatively firm and still obtain a good level of finesse, whereas with this VERY grogged crimson clay, trimming it on the firm side is torture. It tears, the particles of grog rip out and leave you with rough surfaces that are tricky to smooth over properly. This means trimming when the clay is on the softer side, which normally isn’t too bad as the excess grog supports the vessel and adds strength, (if I were to attempt to trim a smoother body in this same condition I could run into issues as the pot lacks strength).   Next, for the rims, I’ll sponge them smooth at the very end. This is something I never do with my other clay, but here it makes all the difference, as long as the sponge itself is very fine and dense. I soak it and let it runs around the lip without pressing too it on too hard. Then, once the lip has dried a touch, I burnish all the way around it using the smooth side of a plastic kidney.    In many ways, these issues aren’t really something you’ll encounter unless you trim a lot, like me, but on the whole, this combination of clays needs to be finished with more care and attention than smoother clays, IF you aren’t creating vessels that’ll ultimately be characterised by their coarseness. In that case go wild, let the grog be present. But for me, what I want from this clay is the red tones and the metal it contains, it’s that which works so well with the crimson glaze that’ll eventually be coated over it.   Otherwise, this stuff is lovely to throw with, despite it being mixed down by 50% with a smooth body, throwing it raw is tough on your hands, but doable, again it just requires a slightly different technique.   #pottery #stoneware #potteryvideos #ceramics #craft #maker
