Last week I was lucky enough to be invited to a demonstration by Moon Do Bang at Cernamic, in London. Moon very kindly gave me one of his trimmers to use and well, I couldn’t help myself, so the following the day I threw eight bowls off the hump and then tried to trim them, replicating some of the techniques he used, (poorly). That’s the subject of my YouTube video this weekend, so, if you’d like to watch me push out of my comfort zone and make in ways that are entirely different from how I normally produce pottery, the longer film on my channel may be of interest, (you can find it by navigating to my Instagram profile, tapping the Linktree, and then clicking the first option). I have tools like this already but they’re so delicate and sharp that I save them for porcelain only, whereas this trimmer feels a bit more robust and up for the challenge of trimming a more grogged clay body. I’ll begin by saying that Moon makes it look very easy, whereas in fact this trimmer proved to be rather difficult to get to grips with but with some practice, and lots of repeated failures, I’ve managed to get to place where it’s very useful for hollowing out the feet of my bowls, or any vessel really with a deeper base. In the full film I discuss troubleshooting new tools, why I think I prefer looped trimmers, and ask the question, why are looped tools more widely used in the West? Verses turning tools like this one, which are more commonly found in the East? A huge thanks to Moon Do Bang and Cernamic, it was a pleasure. I’ve followed Moon for years online and finally getting to put a face to the name, and to see him work in person was a phenomenal experience.
