A former Florida surgeon has been indicted by a grand jury after prosecutors say he mistakenly removed a patient’s liver instead of his spleen during surgery. According to an announcement from the Office of the State Attorney for Florida’s First Judicial Circuit, Dr. #ThomasShaknovsky faces a charge of second-degree manslaughter in connection with the 2024 death of 70-year-old Bill Bryan, a resident of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The procedure took place at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital in Miramar Beach, Florida. Authorities say Bryan was scheduled to undergo a laparoscopic splenectomy—a minimally invasive operation intended to remove the spleen. Instead, prosecutors allege Shaknovsky removed the patient’s liver, leading to severe blood loss and Bryan’s death on the operating table. A Walton County grand jury determined that the surgeon’s actions amounted to criminal conduct under Florida law. Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson said officials are committed to pursuing the case through the legal system, adding that their thoughts are with the victim’s family. Court records do not indicate whether Shaknovsky currently has legal representation. Following the incident, medical boards in multiple states took action against the surgeon. His licenses in Alabama and Florida were suspended in 2024, with New York following suit in 2025. Documents tied to the Florida suspension also revealed a prior surgical error in May 2023, when Shaknovsky allegedly removed part of a patient’s pancreas instead of the intended adrenal gland. When questioned, he reportedly claimed the gland had shifted position in the body. That patient was said to have suffered lasting harm. Officials concluded that the surgeon’s pattern of serious mistakes and lack of accountability posed an ongoing risk to public safety, warranting the suspension of his medical license.#fyp #viral
