Sometimes I don't know how to respond when someone tells me I look healthier. 💜 “You look so much better!” “You must be feeling better!” “It's so nice to see you looking like yourself again!” And I know people usually mean well. I know they're trying to be kind, and I genuinely appreciate that. But sometimes those words leave me feeling something I can't quite explain. Because the truth is, looking better and feeling better are two completely different things. Sometimes I look good because I finally had enough energy to wash my hair. Sometimes I look healthier because I put on makeup, got dressed, and decided I wanted to feel pretty for once. Sometimes I'm smiling because I'm genuinely happy in that moment. And sometimes I'm smiling because I refuse to let every picture of me become a reminder of how much pain I'm in. But none of those things mean my chronic illness has disappeared. I can look perfectly fine while feeling absolutely terrible. I can have my hair done, my makeup looking beautiful, and an outfit I feel confident in while my nerves are burning, my joints are aching, and my body is completely exhausted. And I think that's something people who don't live with chronic illness sometimes struggle to understand. Because we're taught to associate looking healthy with being healthy. But chronic illness doesn't always show itself on the outside. And sometimes the hardest days are the ones nobody would ever guess were difficult. I think what hurts isn't necessarily the compliment itself. It's the feeling that I suddenly have to explain myself. Because when someone tells me I look better, part of me wants to say thank you. But another part of me wants to say, “Please don't mistake the effort I put into looking okay for proof that I'm no longer struggling.” And sometimes I don't say anything at all. Because I don't want to turn a kind comment into a conversation about my health. I don't want to explain every symptom I'm experiencing. I don't want to feel like I have to prove that I'm still sick just because I managed to have a good moment. And I definitely don't want to feel guilty for enjoying myself. That's another strange part of living with an invisible illness. Sometimes you feel like you have to choose between looking sick enough to be believed and looking well enough to feel like yourself. And that's an exhausting place to live. Because I WANT to feel beautiful. I WANT to get dressed. I WANT to laugh, take pictures, go places, and enjoy my life. I don't want every moment of happiness to be questioned because I looked too healthy while experiencing it. And I don't want every difficult day to be doubted because someone saw me smiling yesterday. A good picture doesn't tell you what happened before it was taken or how I felt afterward. It doesn't show the pain I pushed through to get ready. The breaks I needed. The symptoms I kept to myself. Or how exhausted I might have been once I got home. And sometimes there isn't a hidden struggle behind a picture. Sometimes I really am having a better day. But that doesn't erase the difficult ones. I think that's what I wish more people understood. Chronic illness isn't always something you can measure by someone's appearance. And someone shouldn't have to look miserable to have their suffering taken seriously. So please, compliment my hair. Tell me you love my outfit. Tell me it's nice to see me smiling. I genuinely love those things. But please don't assume that because I look better, everything inside my body must be better too. Because sometimes looking like myself again takes every little bit of energy I have. And sometimes, underneath the makeup, the smile, and the pretty outfit, I'm still the same woman fighting battles nobody can see. I'm allowed to look beautiful, feel happy, and still be chronically ill. Those things can all exist at the same time. #chronicpain #AutoimmuneLife #SpoonieSupport #autoimmunediseaseawareness #chronicillness
