@benvalentineart: Self portrait inspired by Rembrandt’s 1659 selfie. This self portrait(not shown but there’s a super hi-res photo at the NGA site) was unusual for him in how direct it was and even for how fat the impasto was - so much so that it lost attribution to him for some time but eventually got it back It was such a good exercise in putting down strokes and leaving them, with minimal manipulation afterwards. Mine was done mostly in one 2-hour session with a second sesh for retouching, which makes me think he was painting very fast by this time in his life (at least 40 years of painting + being one of the GOATs) The darker ground helped it come together fast too. . . . . #oilpaintings #selfportrait #impasto #rembrandt
