Visiting Master bow Craftsman, Kanjuro Shibata in Kyoto柴田勘十郎 XXIの工房への訪問 In kyudo we use an asymmetric bow called a yumi. Yumi are traditionally made from bamboo, modern yumi are carbon or fibreglass.弓道では和弓を使用、大体三つ材料、竹、カーボン、グラスファイバーのどちらかでできてる。 A traditional yumi craftsperson is called a yumishi 弓師. 弓師は竹弓を製作する職人です。 This was my first trip to Kyoto, my first time to meet a yumishi. My first time to meet Kanjuro san. My first time to see a yumi being made right before my eyes.I was really excited. 初京都、柴田さんと初対面、生で弓の製作も初めて。 Shibata Kanjuro XXI is a 21st generation Master bowmaker and a 4th generation official bowmaker to the Emperor of Japan. 柴田家が490年前に始めた弓師歴史では田勘十郎さんが21代目になります。 I visited during the final days of one of his special workshops. I will post about the workshop In the future. The front part of his building is a shop, you walk through and out the back to the workshop. Shibata sans English is very good. 建物に入って、お店通って奥の方行くと工房があります。訪れても大丈夫、写真や動画も大丈夫。 Not only is he a master bow craftsman, he is also a teacher of kyudo. He visits dojos overseas to teach Heki ryu Bishu Chikurin ha a school of archery I will talk about in a separate post. 柴田さん英語がお上手で、アメリカ、カナダ、ユーロッパにある道場で弓教えてます。日置流尾州竹林派の先生でもあります。His father in law Shibata XX founded over 25 kyūdōjō in the United States, Canada and Europe. The time spent with Shibata san was precious. I couldn't stop watching. The different processes of sanding, gluing, twisting rope, hammering bamboo wedges, bending and shaping, and stringing the bow. Each step was breathtaking.柴田の工房で大変貴重な時間でした。一つ一つの作業が面白く、最後に鶴はる瞬間が感度的！鳥肌たちます✨ Shibata san works together with his son Munehiro san. I love that they continue tradition within the family. 息子のむねひろさんと弓製作してます。 Thanks to Shibata san, Kurosu sensei, and Hiro for photos. It was a very educational day.
