Americans living in the moment in the Flatiron District in New York City, 1911. The district is named named after the Flatiron Building at 23rd Street, Broadway and Fifth Avenue. The Flatiron Building, opened in 1902 is one of the oldest of the original New York skyscrapers. The building sits on a triangular block formed by Fifth Avenue, Broadway, and East 22nd Street—where the building's 87-foot (27 m) back end is located—with East 23rd Street grazing the triangle's northern (uptown) peak. The name "Flatiron" derives from its triangular shape, which recalls that of a cast-iron clothes iron. The man walking with crutches was identified as American Civil War veteran, Corporal Jonathan Carson was a member of the 45th New York Infantry Regiment, aka “The German Rifles”, who lost his leg from fighting in small Battle of Wauhatchie, Georgia, October 29, 1863. He had fought atboth the battles or Chancellorsville and Gettysburg before his leg was amputated at aged 20. ℹ️ Archives.com/ military, Britannica, National Park Service.gov NewYorkCity.gov 🎥 U.S. Library of Congress remastered #history #vintagefilm #vintage #flatiron #flatironbuild #manhatten #newyorkcity #civilwarhistory #movie #fyp
