In the glittering heart of the city, where mansions rose like quiet fortresses, Charlotte Austin moved through life as if the world owed her everything. Spoiled to the bone, she barely glanced at her parents’ tired faces or the friends who trailed after her like polite shadows. Respect was something other people needed; she never bothered. That night she stood outside a luxury bar, cigarette between her fingers, smoke curling into the dark. Two men appeared without warning, hands rough on her arms, dragging her into the narrow alley beside the building. Panic hit hard and fast. She fought, but they were stronger. Then vegetables exploded into the air. Engfa Waraha came running, arms full of the day’s unsold vegetables. She didn’t stop to think or shout for help. A heavy squash smashed into one man’s face with a wet, sickening crack. A thick gourd followed, catching the second square in the temple. Both men crumpled to the ground. Engfa stood over them, breathing hard, then broke into a wild, joyful little dance right there in the alley, laughing at the ridiculousness of it even though every ruined vegetable meant less money for her and her grandmother that week. Charlotte stared, stunned. Then, almost against her will, she smiled. This chaotic street vendor with dirt under her nails and pure recklessness in her eyes had just saved her with nothing but vegetables and guts. Engfa peeled off her torn jacket and draped it over Charlotte’s shoulders without a word. “Here. You’re shaking.” Charlotte, who never accepted kindness easily, felt something quiet and unfamiliar settle in her chest. “What’s your name?” she asked as her car pulled up. Engfa’s mouth twitched, fighting a grin. “Just call me teerak.” Charlotte’s own smile softened. “Are you messing with me?” Before Engfa could answer, Sea appeared—polished, familiar, and already looking Engfa up and down like she was something that had crawled out of the gutter. Charlotte stepped forward at once. “Don’t.” After that night Charlotte looked for her. She kept the torn jacket folded in her bag and carried it everywhere. She found Engfa again and again—beside the vegetable stall, under the market lights, laughing over cheap street food. Bit by bit the spoiled girl began to disappear. Charlotte met Engfa’s grandmother in their small, warm home and left with dirt on her expensive shoes and a strange steadiness in her heart. When her friends started asking questions, Charlotte’s voice went cold. “Stay away from her. Or I will make sure you regret it.” Sea watched from a distance. Every time he saw them kiss, something ugly twisted in his chest. He could not stand the way Charlotte looked at Engfa—like the rest of the world had finally gone quiet. One ordinary evening Engfa walked toward the little street-food stall Charlotte had grown to love, humming under her breath, empty-handed for once. Charlotte waited, smiling, until the sudden roar of an engine tore the evening apart. Sea’s car came too fast. Engfa only had time to turn her head. The impact was brutal and final. Charlotte’s scream ripped out of her as she ran, dropping hard to her knees on the rough asphalt. Engfa lay broken and bleeding, yet somehow she still managed a soft, crooked smile. Her trembling fingers rose with the last of her strength, brushing Charlotte’s cheek as if memorizing the feel of it. “I love you,” she whispered. Then her eyes closed. Her hand slipped away and fell limp against the road. Charlotte gathered her close, rocking, calling her name over and over as if the sound alone could drag her back from wherever she had gone. Blood soaked warm and relentless into her clothes. People gathered, voices rose in panic, phones came out, but Charlotte heard none of it. She only held tighter, pressing her face into Engfa’s hair, sobbing until her voice cracked and broke completely, until the world itself felt like it was splitting open inside her chest—and still Engfa did not answer, did not smile, did not dance. #gl #wlw #englot
