@greengoldandblues: This was one of the most memorable rides we’ve done together. This little red mare has taken me places that ‘5 years ago’ me couldn’t have even comprehended. 5 years seems like nothing and a lifetime all at once. While physically I look pretty similar, I can barely recognize the person that 5 years ago almost to the day, walked out of her corporate job to take on this project that hadn’t even been named yet. The craziest part to think about is that I hadn’t even met Thelma yet, nor did I even know she existed. At that point in time she was a 6yo in New Mexico. It’s crazy stepping back in time and looking at that person now, I had absolutely no idea what I was capable of and had no concept of what was even possible, let alone what I was about to go out and do. In my mind I was about to ride across Australia - the USA wasn’t even on my radar yet. That person was filled with boundless optimism, enviable innocence and was about to learn what it feels like to both achieve more than you ever thought possible, and also to be crushed into the smallest version of themselves. It’s been a rollercoaster with both the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, but I wouldn’t change a second. Those lows and hard times have shaped me into the person I am today and have given me more resilience and wisdom than I ever could have had without it. Life is rough. But it’s my belief that those lows truly shape you into a stronger, more capable person. Sometimes it feels like life is delivering you a series of knockout blows, but remember that as you stand here today, you have successfully made it through every challenge life has thrown at you to date. Every heartbreak, every setback and every disaster. The lows are tough, but they make the highs that much sweeter. My grandpa gave me a card once that read: “We look from out the shadows On through future years, For the soul would have no rainbows Had the heart no tears” I hope you all get to find your rainbows and can look back and be so damn proud of how far you’ve come.
