What do health visitors actually do?? Here’s an example of a day 8:30 log on, check emails, plan route for first visit 9am. First visit. Family are seeking asylum from an unsafe country. I complete a transfer in visit. They have no clothes, beds, bedding or toys for their children so I complete a referral to a charity. They also can’t afford enough food. So I complete a food bank referral. 10:30 I return a phone call to a mum calling needing support with her child’s behaviour. We talk for 30 minutes, we also book in a 2 year review for a couple of months time. 11am. Second visit. A 6-8 week check. I weigh and measure baby. Mum becomes very tearful. She admits she’s feeling very low in mood. We talk for some time and together we refer to a talking therapy service. We came up with a manageable plan together around day to day tasks. I book another listening visit in for a couple of weeks time. 12:30 (meant to be lunch time) but I attend a strategy meeting, a child has been caught stealing food from school and has told the teacher their parents chastise them and restrict food (this meeting is urgent and because a child is at risk, all professionals need to attend to make an immediate plan and provide information from their area) 13:30 A new birth visits (baby is between 10-14 days old). Mum and baby are both doing very well. Mum requires some support with breast feeding. I observe a feed and we change her position which helps with latch. Weigh and measure baby. We talk about health promotion topics but I mainly answer questions mum has and match her agenda throughout the visit 15:00 write all the notes up on my laptop. These have to be very thorough. If it’s not written down, then in a court of law it didn’t happen. You have to imagine whatever you are writing could be reviewed and may be used in court one day. It has to be clear, factual and an accurate representation of the visit. 16:15 I then check my diary for the next day. Sort any prep out that needs to be done for that This doesn’t include running clinics, preparing for child protection meetings, attending strategy meetings Please remember. We have come into this job with hope and intentions of making a positive difference. You don’t know what we have seen or dealt with that day. We are trying our best too ❤️❤️ This is an example of a day. For confidential reasons I have not used or shared any actual visits in this post. #parenting #parentsoftiktok #parentingtips #mumsoftiktok #mumlife #mum #healthvisitor #responsiveparenting #gentleparenting #parentingtips #parentingrules #babytok #babyhacksandtips #gentleparentingtips #wholesomemomcontent #mumcontent #momcontentcreator #healthvisitor
