The Story of the Zodiac Killer The notorious serial killer who plagued Northern California during the late 1960s, the story of The Zodiac has grown in infamy due to the mysterious and intriguing nature of the case with many people still attempting to uncover his true identity. In late 1968, two high school students were shot dead whilst parked in a secluded roadside turnout. Their bodies were found by a passer-by soon after, and the police were alerted. Déjà vu occurred soon after when another couple, Darlene Ferrin and Michael Mageau, were both shot by a mysterious figure whilst sitting in their car. Despite being shot numerous times, Mageau survived the attack, describing the killer as a stocky white male of average height with brown hair. Following the second murders, local newspapers began receiving letters from the killer accompanied by cryptograms containing his identity, along with his now well known pseudonym, the Zodiac. Another ill-fated couple would be attacked at Lake Berryessa by a hooded man, being stabbed multiple times and left for dead, with the Zodiac once again informing the police of his actions. Bryan Hartnell managed to survive the stabbing recounting the story to the press whilst in hospital. Two weeks later a cab driver would be shot dead by his white male passenger, with three teeangers reporting the crime as it unfolded. Police officers nearby responded to the call, driving past a man matching the description but due to the radio dispatcher stating it was a black male they continued on their way. Yet again, utilising the newspaper's publicity the Zodiac would prove he was the killer sending a piece of the victims shirt. In the following years, the Zodiac would continue to send many more letters and cyphers to newspapers before disappearing in 1974. Whilst there is no definitive answer to who the Zodiac was, thousands have speculated, yet his true identity remains a mystery.
