Most people don't know the history of this country. Growing up in Tembisa, I witnessed a South Africa that was deeply divided along ethnic lines. I remember a time when we didn't know where to run because of the tensions between Zulus from Sgodiphola Hostel and Xhosas from Sethokga Hostel. I still remember it vividly, it was a Thursday. We were scared and preparing to spend the night in the bushes near Olifantsfontein because we believed it was the safest place to be. I'll never forget that day. The fear, the uncertainty, and the pain of seeing communities divided against one another remain etched in my memory. That is why it worries me when I see politicians using language and actions that risk reopening old wounds. South Africans have come too far and sacrificed too much to go back to those painful days. We should be building unity, not division.
