The litter layer is typically several inches deep and should be kept dry and clean to prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms. As the birds move around and scratch through the litter, they mix their droppings and bedding material together, creating a composting effect. The bacteria in the litter layer break down the organic material, generating heat that helps to keep the birds warm in colder months.
