“They wouldn’t want you to be sad” Is not a helpful thing to say to someone grieving the loss of a loved one, especially their child. Sadness and grief is love that has nowhere to go. Being sad and grieving isn’t a choice. We shared a strong bond and missing him is proof of that beautiful love. There is no moving on from grief, we lost our child. How could anyone expect us to “move on”, that is impossible. Grief isn’t a door we can just walk through and shut behind us as if it never happened. There’s no end, there’s no in between, there’s no moving on, only moving through it….very slowly moving through it the best that we can. No words are going to bring him back or make us feel better, no words can undo the reality and magnitude of losing our only child. It’s okay to be sad. It’s okay to say that we wish that he was still here with us. I feel like a lot of the time when people express their grief they get met with dismissal almost as if it’s not OK to be sad. Telling us that they’re in a better place or at least they’re healed now isn’t helpful. Just sit with us in our grief and don’t try to fix it.
