#Repost @agroecologyschool Leaves are one of my favorite low-cost resources for building healthier soil—and every year, enormous amounts of them get hauled away as “waste”. I source many of mine from local landscapers. They need somewhere to take the leaves they collect, and I’m very happy to give them a home rather than have them hauled to a landfill (and pay a tipping fee). To make leaf mold: Pile your leaves in a designated area, wire enclosure, or compost bin and let decomposition do the work. Keeping them moist and shredding them first will speed the process. I don’t shred them and mostly rely on rainfall, so mine take about a year to become substantially decomposed. My shortcut: You don’t have to wait until the entire pile is finished. Dig into the center and bottom, where moisture is better retained and decomposition often progresses faster. That’s where I harvest the dark, earthy leaf mold while the drier outer leaves continue breaking down. You don’t need a giant pile, either. For mine, I simply use T-posts and wire fencing secured with zip ties. A smaller enclosure works just as well for a home garden. How I use leaf mold: • as mulch around plants • to add organic matter to garden beds • to improve soil structure and water retention • to support a biologically active soil environment If you source leaves from elsewhere, know where they came from. I avoid material that may have been contaminated with herbicides or other unwanted chemicals. Leaves + moisture + time. Nature does most of the work. Leaves aren’t waste. They’re soil waiting to happen. #gardeninspiration #theagroecologyschool #compost #compostscience
