“You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first.” — Author unknown Today, taking care of me first looked a lot like calling my psychiatrist and asking for some extra help. Those of you who have been following me for the long run know I’ve been on this mental health healing journey for 11 months now. And yes, when I signed up for this, I was fully prepared for it to be a long process. Because, if we’re disclosing the whole truth, I’ve given this mental health stuff a few half-assed attempts in the past. I’d start treatment, take my medications, maybe put some effort into therapy... and then, after a few months, I’d get frustrated because “nothing was working.” And the part about nothing working for me wasn’t exactly a lie. I just wasn’t really giving much of it a chance to work. I barely gave my medications enough time to do what they were supposed to do. I didn’t give therapy or the things I was learning enough time to actually become part of my life. I wanted results, and I wanted them quickly. When I didn’t get them, I gave up. So when I decided to start taking care of my mental health seriously this time, I knew I had to be ALL in. And that’s what I prepared myself for. Over the past 11 months, I’ve had 11 appointments with my provider. Eight of those visits included medication changes or dosage adjustments. And honestly? I’ll probably have a few more medication changes before we find the combination that works best for me. And that’s okay. Every single one of us has different brain chemistry and an entirely different “operating system.” 😂 What works for you doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for me, and vice versa. Finding the right treatment can take some trial and error. And at 11 months into this journey, I’m doing okay for the most part. I still have days that are rougher than others, but those days are becoming fewer and farther between. And compared to where I started this journey?! I am a whole new person with a whole new outlook on life. But just because MOST of my days are good doesn’t mean I should automatically accept the bad ones. Where there is room for improvement, I want to improve. I want to live my best life. I want to be the best version of myself. And I’m finally learning that taking care of myself includes speaking up when something doesn’t feel right. So last week, when that overwhelming sensation of impending doom came over me, I knew it was once again time to reach out and ask for help. If this journey has taught me anything, it’s that I don’t have to sit quietly and suffer when there are things I can ask my provider about. So I reached out to my psychiatrist. And for the SECOND time now, because I was denied the first time a few months ago 🙄, I asked if we could either try an as-needed medication for my anxiety or increase one of the medications I’m already taking. Old me? I probably would have never brought it up again after being told no. But new me?! Ya girl has learned the importance of ADVOCATING FOR YOURSELF. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Instead of being scared to ask the question again, I laid out the facts of what I was experiencing, explained how it was affecting me, and asked what we could do about it. And guess what?! A solution is what I got. 🥹 Goodbye, overwhelming anxiety. Hello, hydroxyzine. 💊 And THAT is what taking care of me first looked like this week. Not giving up. Not silently suffering. Not deciding that because I’m “mostly okay,” I should just accept the parts that aren’t. Advocate for yourself. Ask the question. Speak up when something isn’t working. You deserve the chance to feel better. ❤️ #recoverytok #mentalhealthtok #mentalhealthmatters #creatorsearchinsights #selfcaremotivationforwomen
