@gemsofscience: I just restocked our pulled blue sapphire! We have both rich medium cornflower blue and a deeper blue color available, and they both cut amazing gems! We were lucky to find this stuff--while ruby, pink sapphire and colorless sapphire are relatively well known in industry it's much rarer for other colors to be used. It turns out that blue sapphire is sometimes used for some high end optical filter-lenses for high powered flashlamps. These act very similar to a medical laser, focusing filtered light in a narrow range of wavelengths, and can be used for hair removal and some skin treatments--maybe not quite as exciting as a laser but they still have to be grown to a high standard with the expensive czochralski pulling growth method. Fortunately for us the color of these is gorgeous!
