New Video! Here is a performance of Paganini’s Caprice no. 24, filmed on July 26 2024 at La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest in La Jolla, California. Already during his lifetime, Nicolò Paganini’s 24th Capriccio was one of his most famous compositions, and it inspired many transcriptions, including Rachmaninoff’s piano concerto, a cycle of piano etudes by Brahms, orchestral variations by Lutosławski and many others. Years ago, after I performed this piece as an encore somewhere, an audience member came up to me and said “gee, I’ve heard this song played on the guitar and the accordion, I didn’t reckon there was a fiddle transcription as well!” Stylistically, Paganini’s music goes back and forth between lyrical Italian opera writing (like Rossini), and humorous virtuosic interludes paying homage to the Italian baroque virtuoso tradition. It should never sound like an etude (as if the technical feats are the point), or like an aggressive, expressionist effort. An ideal performance for me is funny, entertaining, with lots of changes of character from variation to variation, seemingly effortless despite its insane level of difficulty and not indulging in too much rubato or tricks to make it easier to play. As I returned to the 24th Caprice last summer after taking a break from it for about 6 years, there was definitely a feeling of “this again? I’ve practiced it a thousand times already”. But I also thoroughly enjoyed how this piece chases the violinist up and down the fingerboard like fireworks and every few seconds has something new and surprising in store.
