Thanks @nbcnews for including me in this important article on risk factors for breast cancer in young women. I urge you to read the entire article but these are the key points: 1️⃣ Rising breast cancer rates in young women: breast cancer rates in women under 50 have risen by over 15% in the last two decades, in part due to an increase in estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer. 2️⃣ Early puberty and later motherhood are factors contributing to this rise. The age of menarche (onset of menstrual periods) has been decreasing which is likely contributing to the breast cancer risk. Having a baby may temporarily increase a woman’s breast cancer risk, but slightly lowers long-term risk - however, the older a woman is when she has her first pregnancy, the higher-risk she is in the short term. One of the reasons may be that younger bodies typically are better at quelling inflammatory responses and repairing damaged DNA. There is a lot more research needed here. 3️⃣ It really is a complex interplay of many factors. The increase in breast cancer among younger women is driven by a mix of factors, including obesity, lifestyle factors, genetics, and possibly environmental toxins. When interviewed for this article, I stressed that we need research into environmental toxins such as endocrine disruptors and breast cancer risk. 4️⃣ We really must personalize breast cancer screening and continue to evaluate a woman’s breast cancer risk on an individual level to try to identify those at risk (these risk models aren’t perfect by any means and we need more research here as well) but it is a start.
