#shadowthehedgehog ;; Yapfest incoming i only made tjis for an excuse to blab i don't believe shadow has ever been over any of his trauma. after his fall in sa2, i'm more inclined to believe his amnesia is dissasociative in nature, which is why he only recalls his name and the most traumatizing of his past, later misremembers maria's wish and very gradually regains memories. he experiences so much manipulation in trying to find his identity, particularly from black doom which is only more trauma to tack on, and maria serves as an added trigger for him. the video from maria and gerald is shown to him, and now what he knows is that the only two people who truly knew him intended for him to be a "beacon of hope" and a hero. he declares that he'll define himself, but from then on, continues to act in a way that aligns with maria and gerald's wish/intent for him, but also becomes more detached, especially after the ending cutscene in throwing their picture away. shadow isn't very expressive at the best of times, but throughout 06 and then on, he isn't even so much as reactive. being told that humanity will blame and trap him again, that one of his closest allies will be the one to assist, garners no reaction from him but indifference. even rouge clarifying her loyalty, he doesn't even manage to respond verbally (which is a trend for him) and can't make eye contact. he's detached, and often written more like sa2 shadow before his memory was corrected—dismissive, above it all, and handling everything as he sees fit. more recently, he remains this detached in response to other horrors that may face him. gerald informing him that black doom will use his body to carry out his doings in one way or another receives nothing but his affirmation that he can handle it, because he is the ultimate lifeform, and because he has to. he has never gotten a chance to properly process very much of his trauma because the only way he does is to detach and continue on, because that's all he can do, and it counts as 'moving on' in some sense. he constantly affirms himself through this, to affirm his identity and what he wants to be. he desperately wants to be moved on, so he tells himself verbally throughout dark beginnings and generations that he Needs to continue forward and not to be caught up in the past because he desires to truly have that, but repressed emotions will always catch up. it's most obvious in how maria triggers his behavior, because coming to terms with that she is truly here as a real being restores his desire to protect her, and almost immediately he latches onto the idea that he may be able to save her and gerald despite the logic of the situation. he gets progressively softer and more exlressive around their presence and remains clung to the idea that maybe he will save them and be able to fix where he's failed before and that he will regain that meaning. but as expected, this doesn't work, and it never could've. as the time anomaly or whatever the fuck idk heals, they're returning to their own time, and shadow returns to the desperation he'd had in 05. maria and gerald are his trauma, and in a sense, his meaning. losing them means he fails again, means he loses what could make him himself, means he loses the two people who truly knew and cared for him. even with maria's reassurance, there's no shaking the hurt that comes with failing to save your family again and watching them fade. there's shame in that he failed, shame in that he had tried to cling to the past he tried so hard to move on from. i think that's most exemplified in the tear that he sheds on his way away from them. and detachment as his primary form of coping is clearly presented in his behavior when he appears at the final boss fight and in his behavior after (in crossworlds, again he becomes dismissive and above-it-all and in many cases aggressive). but also sega probably just wanted to milk the maria storyline — #mariarobotnik #geraldrobotnik #arksiblings #sonic
