@emma_pike_: It’s true that you can’t force countries to join treaties that make up international law. That doesn’t mean countries that don’t join treaties are automatically exempt from them, though. Some people (rather lazy, boring, and unimaginative if you ask me) will say that means international law means nothing! Here’s why that’s wrong: The Nuclear Ban Treaty sets a precedent of nuclear weapons being comprehensively banned under intl law. This makes it an incredibly powerful tool for non nuclear-armed states (as well as marginalized groups, subjects of nuclear colonialism, indigenous peoples who are disproportionately affected by nuclear weapons, etc) to come to the negotiating table. The TPNW is a powerful tool for increasing stigma, facilitating divestment, and for the non nuclear armed states and the world to put pressure on the nuclear armed states to move toward disarmament.
