700 years ago, the #Japanese gave us a system by which you can become a master of any art. It's known as ‘geido.’ It's a system that can be used for #calligraphy and #painting as much as martial arts or a tea ceremony. According to geido, a master has to go through three phases. First, there is the mental commitment to the art because this will take many years of sweat and tears, but hopefully not blood. Nothing great was achieved quickly, and if you're not willing to devote yourself, you will never be a master. Second, a student must give all of their time to mimicking an existing master of that art form. In this stage, they learn how to see the world as the master does, in what is called a heart-to-heart transmission. The third and final stage is when the artist expresses themselves and steps out from their master's shadow. They can do whatever they enjoy or choose to do, but with mindlessness (called mushin) and a sense of whimsical play (known as yuge). Imagine Pollock splashing his canvas or #Lennon / #McCartney jamming in the studio. In these moments of expression, it’s said that the artist will discover an element of themselves. In the movement of a #dance , the #writing of a word, the melody of a song, or the stroke of a brush, the #artist will find something about themselves that was always there but latent. If you speak to any committed artist in any field, they will often talk about an encounter a bit like geido. They might call it inspiration, or a muse, or the spirit of #art itself, but in dedicated #artistic expression, many people will find themselves.
