Today, the term Dictatorship of the Proletariat is misunderstood by liberals and anti-communists by taking the term at its face value. They see the word dictatorship, and imagine a tyrannical one-man rule and totalitarian suppression. This deliberate misreading ignores the precise scientific meaning Marxism gives to the term and, more importantly, obscures the fact that we already live under a dictatorship, the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie. For Marxists, “dictatorship” is not defined by its modern usage. It comes from the Latin
Today, the term Dictatorship of the Proletariat is misunderstood by liberals and anti-communists by taking the term at its face value. They see the word dictatorship, and imagine a tyrannical one-man rule and totalitarian suppression. This deliberate misreading ignores the precise scientific meaning Marxism gives to the term and, more importantly, obscures the fact that we already live under a dictatorship, the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie. For Marxists, “dictatorship” is not defined by its modern usage. It comes from the Latin "dictatura", meaning the exercise of supreme authority by a single sovereign power. From this class perspective, every state in history has been a dictatorship of one class over another. Feudalism was the dictatorship of the feudal lords, who used their state power to enforce the rule of the manor over the serfs. What we call “liberal democracy” or “capitalist democracy” is, in its essence, the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie. Behind the illusion of elections, parliaments, and “free speech,” the capitalist state functions with its purpose to protect private property relations, enforce the rule of the capitalist class, and suppress any threat to its system through its police, courts, and laws. The Dictatorship of the Proletariat is therefore the necessary and logical answer to bourgeois rule. It is the form of state power through which the working class, after overthrowing the capitalist class, rules society. It is the period where the formerly oppressed class (the majority) now holds state power to suppress the inevitable resistance of the former ruling class (the minority) and to reorganize society. Marx first articulated this concept, arguing that between capitalist and communist society there must be a political transition period in which the state can be nothing but the revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat. The DoP tasks are clear and historically necessary. First, it must smash the old bourgeois state apparatus, its standing army, police force, bureaucracy, and courts, which is designed to oppress. The proletariat cannot simply take over this machine and use it for its own ends; it must break it and replace it with a new state machinery that serves the workers. Second, this new workers’ state must use its power to disarm the bourgeoisie and suppress its attempts at counter-revolution and restoration. Third, it must expropriate the bourgeoisie, abolishing the private ownership of the means of production and placing them under social ownership. Finally, and most importantly, it must use this power to reorganize the entire economic and social foundation of society, laying the groundwork for a classless, communist future where the state itself, as an instrument of class rule, will wither away and become unnecessary. Lenin in The State and Revolution, provided the most concrete development of this concept. He identified the soviet, the workers’ council, as the practical form this dictatorship would take, a far more direct and genuine democracy based on class and workplace rather than the hollow geographic constituencies of bourgeois parliaments. Lenin emphasized that while the Dictatorship of the Proletariat is still a state and therefore an instrument of coercion, it is a state of a new type. For the first time in history, it represents the dictatorship of the enormous majority over a tiny minority of former exploiters. A crucial Leninist addition was the role of the vanguard party, the most class-conscious and organized detachment of the working class, which is necessary to provide guidance and leadership to the wider class in carrying out these immense historical tasks. In summary, the DoP is not the rule of a single man or a party over the people. It is the rule of the working-class majority over the defeated capitalist class.
