Definitely applies in Spain mainly. Spanish in South America we use a lot of por favor, me harias el favor de darme, serías tan amable etc etc.

Just a gentle reminder that "me pones una caña" is bar slang only. In a posh restaurant you ask "Yo tomaré una cerveza".
