China has come up with a strange solution to gaming addiction: force the kid to play more. Parents send their kids to esports camps that grind the dream out of them. Take one middle schooler named Xiao Dan. By five in the afternoon on his first day, his right index finger was twitching on its own, and it would not stop. He is a junior high student in Fuzhou who told his father he was going to turn pro. So his father, Zhang Feng, drove more than 300 kilometers to an esports club in Shijiazhuang and let the boy live the pro life he kept putting off school for. The father had no doubts:

The club charges several thousand yuan for 7 days (a few hundred dollars), and over 10,000 yuan for 22 days (more than $1,480). Training runs 9am to midnight, with breaks only for meals and a run. After every match the kids write a review of how they played, and going in, he figured that was better than school: "As long as it isn't problem sets and online classes, I'll write as many match reviews as you want." Then he actually had to do it, for 15 hours a day. By days two, three, and four, he was miserable at the end of every session. Su Chenhao, who founded the club in 2018, says kids are crying to go home by day two. Asked why this works so well, Su says: "Once anything becomes a KPI assessment, it becomes extremely boring." The game becomes a job, and a 14-year-old quits a job without being asked twice. Nearly 4,000 children have been through since 2018, and the club says 85% were never prospects, just kids avoiding school. On the way out, the club tells the boy he can train again in the holidays, which lands less like a reward than a warning: stay in school, or you will be right back here. So for a few hundred dollars, the parents buy 7 days of the thing their son loved most, turned into a job, until he quits on his own.
