“Every 10 minutes” That's how often a woman is killed by an intimate partner or family member, according to new global estimates on femicide by the UN. The report by @unwomen found 85,000 women and girls were killed intentionally by men in 2023, with 60% (51,100) of these deaths committed by someone close to the victim. It is estimated 140 women and girls across the world die at the hands of their partner or family member every day. The organisation added that its figures – published to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women – showed that, globally, the most dangerous place for a woman to be was in her home, where the majority of women die at the hands of men. Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, UN Women’s deputy executive director, said: “What the data is telling us is that it is the private and domestic spheres of women’s lives, where they should be safest, that so many of them are being exposed to deadly violence. We see the numbers in this report as the tip of the iceberg because we know not all women’s deaths are recorded, and not all causes of death are accurately recorded as femicides, and there were many communities where we couldn’t access any information.” The UN global estimates on femicide, defined as the gender-related killing of women and girls, showed an overall decrease on the 89,000 intentional deaths of women and girls in 2022, but an increase in numbers killed by intimate partners and family members. Despite facing criminal charges of racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation for prostitution, Sean “Diddy” Combs seems to be breaking more ground on music streaming platforms. His monthly listeners on Spotify climbed from 9.6m on 18 September, around the time when news of his arrest became public, to 13.2m a month later, according to data from Chartmetric, which provides music data analytics. But why? Reporter Gloria Oladipo takes a closer look at the possible reasons for people still tuning in – as well as who is benefiting. Combs has pleaded not guilty and denied multiple sexual assault accusations from more than two dozen civil lawsuits that accuse him of abusing men and women – some underage at the time of the alleged assaults – blackmailing them with footage of the incidents, as well as threatening and beating witnesses and committing kidnap and arson. To read Oladipo’s piece, including how Combs is the latest in a series of powerful men in the music industry to have faced accusations of sexual abuse, but whose popularity has been unaffected, tap the link in bio.
