President-elect Donald Trump said Tuesday that the United States needs both Greenland and the Panama Canal “for economic security” and did not rule out using military and economic force to get control of both. “The Panama Canal was built for our military,” Trump said at a news conference at his Florida estate. “The Panama Canal is vital to our country.” For 65 years after the canal’s opening in 1914, the U.S. solely operated the canal. In 1979, as a result of a treaty signed by President Jimmy Carter, control of the canal passed to an agency run jointly by the U.S. and Panama. Two decades later, Panama took sole control over the operations of the canal. During the news conference, the president falsely claimed that China is running the Panama Canal. Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino said last month during a news conference that “there is absolutely no Chinese interference or participation in anything that has to do with the Panama Canal.” At the same time, U.S. officials have expressed concerns over growing Chinese influence at shipping ports across the globe. The president-elect has also made past comments about acquiring Greenland, the world’s largest island and an autonomous territory of Denmark. His remarks Tuesday come as his son, Donald Trump Jr., traveled to the island. Greenland’s government said in a statement that Trump Jr. was visiting “as a private individual” and officials there would not meet with him, according to The Associated Press. #trump #donaldtrump #panamacanal #jimmycarter #trumpnews #trumpgreenland #greenland #denmark #trumpremarks #news #pbsnews #newshour #pbsnewshour
