@dr.nicole.vangroningen: NPO past midnight culture is tough to change! Has anyone successfully done it at their hospital? We’re trying here but it hasn’t always been the easiest. I’m guessing it’s an issue at many hospitals. #hospitalistlife #hospitaltiktoks #hospitalistmedicine #internalmedicine #doctorsoftiktok #nursesoftiktok

then the procedure gets delayed and it’s too late to order dinner trays. I’ve seen these poor pts go NPO for DAYS because of this cycle!

My last surgery, the anesthesiologist told me to chug a glass of apple juice 2hr before I show up. I felt so much better with that sugar spike

That’s because the nurses will be confused. It’s just easier to make everyone NPO at the same time before a procedure

I agree!!!! NPO p MN is so archaic. Makes the procedure so much harder in the body. I would love this 2 change!

is it terribly difficult for patients to fast until 5pm? if you're not active then there must not be much demand for calories

The problem isn't that for nursing staff, it isn't realistic to enforce patient specific NPO times.

To be fair, in the Cath Lab we cling to it because we might bump your procedure up

tbf that would mean we couldn't pull someone in early if a spot opens up

I feel like it’s just more convenient Day shift nurses don’t have time to make sure npo at a random time in the middle of day.

That’s nice and all but we never know when OR actually wants to pull the patient for surgery. Communication would be nice

So can I hit up my anesthesiologist to ask if my patient is allowed to have clear liquids 2 hours before Sx ?

Word. I've had so many things thrown at me because an MD/DO decided NPO after MN was best for surgery after 12noon.

It's more because breakfast comes out around 7-9 and there are numerous times patients eat if that NPO sign isn't there. A after bfast order can fail
