State forces, insurgents, and occupying foreign armies relied on a vast array of small arms. The communist factions and the Vietnamese People's Army, heavily supported by the Soviet Bloc, utilized the PK/PKM extensively as their primary squad automatic weapon to combat republican forces.The weapon's journey through Cambodian history shifted notably during and after the Vietnamese occupation. When the People's Republic of Kampuchea was established, the newly formed Kampuchean People's Revolutionary Armed Forces (KPRAF) were heavily equipped, trained, and supplied by the Vietnamese military.
