The original recipe had meat on it. Some places still make them with meat.

Poor people couldn't afford meat in winter so this became a tradition of preserving fruit for making pies in winter.

It’s British. It was a way to preserve meat other than curing, salting, drying or smoking. It has the word meat in bc that’s what it originally was.

Meat comes from the old English form Mete. Where it just meant food. Meat being used for, well meat is a newer meaning.

it was just a spiced meat pie with sultanas and raisins. not its just fruit and suet and usually apple based
