Happy “official” birthday, Sacramento! On February 27, 1850, Sacramento became an incorporated city in the territory of California. California, however, did not become a state until September 9, 1850. Sacramento City was founded along Sacramento River’s waterfront, where Old Sacramento is today, in December 1848 when John Sutter Jr. and Samuel Brannan hired Captain William H. Warner, Lieutenant William Tecumseh Sherman, and Lieutenant Edward O. Ord to survey the land from Sutter’s Fort to the Sacramento River. Warner, Sherman, and Ord created a simple grid system for the streets of Sacramento from the waterfront at Front Street to 31st Street, a street grid that still exists today in Downtown and Midtown Sacramento. A public auction was held in January 1849 to sell some of the first city lots in Sacramento. The most desirable lots were the ones closest to the waterfront and Sacramento grew a transportation and trading hub for goods and people during the California Gold Rush. In honor of today, Jared letterpress printed a modern photo engraving, made about 40 years ago, that includes the word “Sacramento,”the State Capitol building, and a steamboat traveling on the Sacramento River. You might still see old signs in Downtown with this image on it! This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. #SacHistoryMuseum #happybirthday #onthisday #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #printing
