These days, just about everyone knows someone with an autism spectrum disorder. 20 years ago, few of us knew any such persons. Yesterday’s Wall Street Journal reported the average ACT score for high schoolers for 2023 was the lowest in 30 years at 19.2, and the sixth straight year of declines. There are all kinds of theories out there about what’s going on, but the truth is, these things are notoriously difficult to research. There are obvious ethical issues with exposing kids to something we suspect hurts brain function as part of a test group. So all we can do really is look back retrospectively at kids that were exposed to something and compare them to kids who weren’t. A study published two days ago did just that with the two most widely used agricultural pesticides in the world, glyphosate and 2,4-D. Higher urine levels of 2,4-D were associated with neurobehavioral performance in attention and inhibitory, impulse control, memory, language, and learning. Higher levels of glyphosate were associated with lower scores in social perception only. These aren’t the first studies that have shown harm from pesticides. Look, we don’t have all the answers, but it appears one thing we can do is avoid pesticides by not working around them, not using them, and certainly not eating them. Buy organic foods for your family whenever possible. When we find out one day in this life or the next what happened to our children, no one wants to hear it was the food we fed them.
