FIFA President Gianni Infantino acknowledged Wednesday that visa decisions are in the hands of the host country. It comes as the Trump administration’s immigration restrictions have impacted players, officials, journalists, and fans ahead of the 2026 World Cup. A BBC journalist asked Infantino whether he was embarrassed by the visa issues and if he had lost control of the tournament. Rather than answering directly, FIFA's president responded with a question of his own: "Would you find it normal that FIFA would dictate to the British government who to let in the country and who not to let in the country?" The question comes after the U.S. blocked the entry of referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan of Somalia, one of 52 selected for this summer’s World Cup. American authorities alleged he had "association with suspected members of terror organizations." At least 15 Iranian team officials and staff have reportedly been denied visas, according to Iranian state media. Iran's team will be allowed to play in the U.S., but moved its training base to Tijuana, Mexico, and must enter and leave U.S. soil on the same day as each match. Iraqi striker Aymen Hussein was detained for seven hours at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. He was let into the U.S., but one of the team's photographers was denied entry. Fans and journalists from dozens of countries also face full or partial U.S. travel restrictions. The U.S. put 39 countries under a full or partial travel ban. For 19 of those countries, the State Department has suspended issuing all visas. Iran, Haiti, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal have bans, but are playing in the tournament. Infantino said, "there are things we can know, things we cannot know, things we are told, things we are not told," and asked critics to "trust us that we are working behind the scenes."
