Mantsopa (1793-1908) was a revered Basotho prophetess, rainmaker, and storyteller in what is now the Free State province of South Africa. Born in Likotsi or Ramakhetheng west of the Caledon River, 'Mantsopa was descended from the royalty of Bakwena ba Monaheng and named after the folktale teller Ntsopa. Mantsopa's father was Makhetha, half-brother to the seer and Bakoena chief Mohlomi. By the 1840s, she was renowned as a rainmaker, seer, and diviner, uniting the Sotho people during a time of frequent raiding between Afrikaner settlers and the Basotho. Mantsopa advised King Moshoeshoe I and predicted outcomes of several battles, including the Battle of Viervoet in 1851 and the Battle of Berea in 1852. Her prophecies were fulfilled, making her a living legend and advisor to Kgosi Lepoqo (Moshoeshoe). In the late 1860s, 'Mantsopa was exiled to Modderpoort due to Kgosi Lepoqo(Moshoeshoe)' sfear of her growing influence. She converted to Christianity in 1870, taking the name Anna Makhetha, and was active in the Anglican community. Mantsopa died in 1908 and was buried in Modderpoort cemetery. Her grave is a pilgrimage site. The Mantsopa Local Municipality in the Free State was named in her honor in 2002. Mantsopa's legacy is that of a symbol and embodiment of female spiritual leadership in Basotho culture.
