We’ve had a lot of people ask us how Winnie got parvo. The sad truth is that we will never know for sure. Since we never took her anywhere, she was never exposed in an obvious manner. Our doctors said parvo is literally everywhere and highly contagious. Winnie had not left the comfort of our home since we got her and she was also vaccinated twice against parvo (& was scheduled for her third vaccine too but fell ill before she could get it). ➡️ Always pick up your dog’s poop because this is the best way to prevent the spread of disease. ➡️ Stay on top of vaccines! And if you fall behind for whatever reason, don’t bring your dog to public spaces. This is not only to protect your dog, but to protect other dogs too. ➡️ Do not wear your shoes inside. This is something we wish we knew. Parvo is everywhere and your dog can be exposed just from the bottom of your shoes. ➡️ Consider purchasing products that are used by veterinary offices because they kill illnesses specific to pets. Bleach kills everything, but you can’t use bleach on all surfaces. We now have Rescue wipes and spray on-hand. It can be used in the yard and on any surfaces without damaging it. ➡️ Don’t allow play dates or adventures until after fully vaccinated. ➡️ If you have other dogs, it would be best if you can keep them home too until your new puppy is fully vaccinated. If you can’t, try your best to clean your other dogs’ paws whenever they return from a walk or adventure to keep your puppy at home safe. ➡️ Consider treating your yard before puppy’s arrival. Parvo can live in yards for months, sometimes years if the environment is hot. It hides under gravel and mulch. You can treat your yard with Rescue. ➡️ Insure your puppy before you bring them home. We wish we would have done this because it happened so quickly and we were still in the process of adding Winnie to Wesley’s insurance policy. Again, there may be more things.
