When I think back on it now, posting on social was actually like jumping into the deep end of a pool. I knew I was going to be uncomfortable, but I just wanted to get it over with. At first, it was hard to have this conversation over and over again, even with my really close friends. I was constantly feeling embarrassed and like I needed to defend myself, even if that wasn’t totally the case. After a few months I remember telling Matt, “I’m so tired of coming out over and over. I just want to be out. I don’t want it to be a thing anymore. I just want people to know.” I remember coming out to my co-workers during a “break the glass” exercise and they all clapped for me and called me brave which made me want to absolutely die 💀💀💀 But dang, things could have gone so much worse. I’m not blind to my privilege. I watched as both of my sister’s bared their souls to my family and the world. They paved the way for me. I wish I was half as strong as either of them, honestly. I had an accepting family and friend circle. Not everyone does. Not everyone’s coming out story is merely “uncomfortable.” The pain some people feel is unfathomable and I know that. I don’t want anyone to think I need them to feel bad for me. I’m just a girl, standing in front of you, telling you she’s bi 🧍🏻‍♀️And bringing more visibility to my LGBTQIA+ peeps.
