I am quite disturbed and appalled by the proliferation of contents produced by content creators covering a topic ‘migrate to Australia’. I hope that the practices of these content creators are investigated and regulated by the Australian Department of Home Affairs. Just this year, a content creator even shared on TikTok that she earns 100k in a month as an international student. On top of this, one can easily notice a ‘network of content creators’ that flames romanticised narratives of migration. These content creators frame their content as a way of ‘helping aspiring migrants’ but some information shared are misleading and creating false hope. It’s exploitative when one profits from baiting aspiring migrants, turning engagement to views and followers. As a critical researcher of digital media, migration and content creation, I firmly believe that regulation is much needed. The battle of misleading migrants is no longer happening offline.
