I've seen so many videos on the internet of people attempting to have their dog smell their new baby's scent for the first time.⁣ ⁣ Even worse are some of the videos I see of trainers advising how to make a
I've seen so many videos on the internet of people attempting to have their dog smell their new baby's scent for the first time.⁣ ⁣ Even worse are some of the videos I see of trainers advising how to make a "positive" association to the scent of the baby.⁣ ⁣ Usually, these videos show an owner bringing the new baby's blanket (swaddle) and/or diaper for the dog to smell.⁣ ⁣ With the dog in an aroused state, the human takes the scent out and excitedly says something like, "Meet your new brother!"⁣ ⁣ The dog all aroused moves forward, smelling the scent of the baby and is all over the scent and may even grab the blanket/diaper and run away with it.⁣ ⁣ In my humble opinion, there is nothing "positive" or "good" about that approach.⁣ ⁣ Why?⁣ ⁣ This approach tells a dog that, through their primary sense, their sense of smell, that the scent of the baby means getting aroused/excited and invading space.⁣ ⁣ This can lead to major problems in the future where the dog has zero respect for the baby's space, claims the baby as theirs (guards from human), or even worse growls or snaps at the baby to correct them.⁣ ⁣ Instead, I recommend thoroughly exercising your dog before this scent ritual.⁣ ⁣ Then, with the dog calm, bring the scent and ask your dog to stay calm, give distance, and ideally move back a bit.⁣ ⁣ We MUST do this in a calm, confident state of mind ourselves.⁣ ⁣ This tells the dog through their primary sense, their sense of smell, that this scent means stay calm and give distance... (for now).⁣ ⁣ Stay tuned for the next video as I'll show this next step of how to properly introduce a baby's scent, the Dog Psychology way!
