Funny enough iron is the swing point, and fusing stars can’t make it past it. Heavier elements probably come from colliding stars!

Thermonuclear fission tops out on Fe. Stars don’t fission past this point because the energy to fuse is greater than what’s created.

to put simply, Iron is the lowest energy state, it releases energy to form iron, so when you fuse elements it's always towards iron
