Lived in Long Beach for 5 years. It can be nice. Long Beach has good buses. The beach is not that nice. Everywhere in CA you need a car for freedom.

Cool spots in Tiburon (San Fran area) away from the city but can get to ferry and lots of trails/walkability. Close to the water and Marin headlands.

SF is great, as long as you stay away from Tenderloin the rest of the city is fun & doesn’t have much homelessness. Very walkable too

I've been through Long Beach on the ships before; definitely more industrial, there's a major port there. #1 is probably your best bet.

If you want a cool place check out Ventura/ Santa Barbara area! Lots to do and still close to LA. about an hour drive to DTLA
