This is because they use an oil gland located above their tail to clean their feathers, making them less dusty than "powder birds." Powder birds, like cockatoos, cockatiels, and African greys, do not have oil glands, but they do produce a fine powder that is the result of the breakdown of special downy feathers. The powder helps to clean and protect the feathers. This powder is why these species, and others like them, are considered "dusty." But the truth is, all parrots give off parrot dander, also known as feather dust. This is produced from the feathers when they preen or flap their wings. So, while they may not affect those allergic to dust, they can still affect those with allergies, AND they can still cause a lung disease called bird fanciers lung, a relatively rare and serious chronic lung disease, as well as other illnesses.
