But at some point, wouldn’t the smaller gauge cause hemolysis too? We have always been told 20g minimum for administering blood for that reason?

I was always told smaller syringes cause more pressure. Never felt right to me - didn’t make sense. Thank you for validating me!

Unfortunately OB is high risk for hemorrhagic shock. Those higher bore catheters are indicated because of the birthing process

out of curiosity, once blood from the IV is waster could you then add a leur lock blood collection. adapter and use the vacuum from the tubes?

YESSSS. Between the tourniquet and the 3mm syringe, I never had a hemolyzed sample. So useful for pts that are hard sticks but have a patent IV!!

my current ER is trying to implement this, they don't want us drawing from IV starts. it's caused such a delay in care it's crazy.

This is difficult in the ED (depend on the pt c/c) cause ED lot of times need 20g+ for specific procedures. I dont see way around 2 sticks for the pt

great explanation, but I'm an ED nurse, we need larger bore for fluid resuscitation and CT exams, but 3cc is the way to go.

Our policy is only the ED can draw back on a PIV. Idk why honestly but it’s unfortunate.

I’m so glad you mentioned the gauge of the syringe! If it’s not a CVC then I’m using a 3ml syringe every time.
