On Wednesday June 17, I organized a delegation of people from Los Angeles to Tijuana to support Iran’s national team. We started with a group leaving from Union Station and picked up people along the way in Irvine, and met people in Tijuana. Our group was composed of Iranian Americans, Afghans, Mexicans, people who love football and support Team Melli. We received such a warm welcome from the people of Tijuana. They stopped to talk to us and asked for flags, they honked in support, and we even ran into two Iranians living in Tijuana who support the team. The team has been forced to stay outside of the U.S. even though all of their matches are in the United States. Many members of their staff and media have been denied visas, and they have been subjected to interrogations at the border delaying their travel. We wanted to cross the border and go to them to show our support. We know that their treatment is part of a broader issue of discrimination. Countries from the Global South have been required to jump through more hoops at the World Cup, have been subjected to discriminatory treatment, and their people have been denied visas or required to post bonds just to visit to support their teams. Of course, this is all to say that they can’t stand to see us do well on the global stage. The whole world is behind Team Melli. ¡Vamos a ganar! Let’s go Team Melli! Do do do do do do Iran! @Sara in Tehran 🇮🇷 @The Mary Houlihan Show on YT @FIFA World Cup #teammelli #worldcup #fifa #tijuana #losangeles
