This was filmed last Wednesday morning at Animal Shelter in Lexington, Kentucky. The woman is Margaret Elaine Foster. She's 76 years old. The dog is a small golden mixed-breed named Teddy. Eight years old. Margaret has had him since he was ten weeks old. Margaret's health has been declining for several months. Her daughter and son-in-law live in Lexington and have been helping with her care, but the level of support Margaret now needs has made living alone difficult. Last month, her doctor recommended a transition to an assisted living facility. Margaret toured three facilities in Lexington. The one that felt right - Sycamore Gardens - is clean, kind, and close to her daughter. It does not allow pets. Margaret spent two weeks trying to find an alternative. Called everyone she could think of. Her daughter asked neighbors. Her son-in-law asked coworkers. Nobody was in a position to take Teddy long-term and give him the care he needed. Margaret drove to shelter on a Wednesday morning. Her daughter offered to come. Margaret said she needed to do it herself. She walked in carrying Teddy's bed, his food bowl, and a ziplock bag of his favorite treats with a handwritten note attached listing everything about him. What he likes. What scares him. That he needs to sleep with a blanket even in summer. That he likes to sit near a window in the afternoon. Shelter coordinator Janet sat with Margaret at the front desk to complete the paperwork. Teddy stayed pressed against Margaret's legs the entire time. Both front paws wrapped around her ankle. Every time Margaret shifted in her chair, Teddy shifted with her. Not whining. Not pulling. Just staying as close as he could possibly get. Margaret signed each page slowly. Her hand was shaking. Tears dropped onto the desk. At one point she reached down and stroked Teddy's head without looking at him. Teddy pressed further into her legs. Janet told us:

Just staying as close as he could possibly get. Margaret signed each page slowly. Her hand was shaking. Tears dropped onto the desk. At one point she reached down and stroked Teddy's head without looking at him. Teddy pressed further into her legs. Janet told us: "I've been doing intake for six years. l've sat with a lot of people at that desk. Margaret was trying so hard to be composed. She'd clearly rehearsed staying calm. But when Teddy wrapped around her ankle and wouldn't move, she just couldn't hold it anymore. And honestly, neither could I." Margaret stood up when the paperwork was complete. She knelt down on the shelter floor with some difficulty and held Teddy for a long time. She whispered something to him that Janet couldn't hear. Then Margaret stood up, handed the leash to Janet, and walked to the door. She paused at the door for a moment. Didn't turn around. Then she left. Janet stood in the lobby holding Teddy's leash. Teddy watched the door. Margaret's daughter called Shelter that same evening to check that Teddy had settled in. She told Janet: "Mom hasn't stopped crying since she got home. She keeps saying she's sorry. Like she has something to be sorry for."Janet said: "Please tell your mother that Teddy is safe and warm and he finished his dinner. And tell her that leaving him here when it was the only option left - that's one of the most loving things a person can do for a dog they love. That's not abandonment. That's sacrifice." *Loving something deeply sometimes means making the decision that breaks your heart so it doesn't break theirs.*
